Tyre tread depth in Ireland

Check the grooves before the weather turns.

The legal minimum

In Ireland the minimum tread depth for car tyres is 1.6mm across the main part of the tread. Many drivers plan a replacement before reaching it, because grip in the wet drops as the grooves wear.

How to check

Use a tread depth gauge in the main grooves, in a few places around the tyre. Most tyres also have small tread wear indicators inside the grooves: when the tread is level with them, it is time for new tyres.

Plan it, do not wait for a puncture

If your tyres are close to the limit, call with the size and book mobile tyre fitting at a time that suits you.
